STITCHTOSTITCH was launched as a concept in 2014. Two women, Pinkie & Debbie merged a passion to see single, unemployed, women being empowered and equipped towards becoming financially independent. Initially the programme was run on church premises. Each week the sewing studio would need to be dismantled and then reassembled at the start of each new week. The facility accommodated ten trainees. All the equipment was provided through donors.

Potential trainees would be interviewed by Pinkie and Debbie Sloane. We were very specific in wanting to reach single, unemployed mothers. Some of the trainees who excelled on the programme were offered positions as assistant trainers. We used the services of others who were prepared to volunteer their services. These included a life coach and a Christian counsellor. The trainees who successfully met all the programme requirements graduated at a special graduation ceremony. Despite the programme running very successfully, we had to provide travel money for the ladies as most of them lived in outlying areas. One trainee travelled on her bicycle for every training session. Having our own studio in Khayalitsha was not only a dream come true but it also opened up the opportunity for us to reach more trainees at no cost to them.

Our focus has always been on the well being of the whole person. We provided counseling where necessary and also provided spectacles for those who required these.

For the near future,

Phase four of the project would be the Incubation System, which will be offered to the trainees who have successfully done phase one up to phase three.

Each trainee in phases four – five must be able to identify their target market.

Once trainees have completed the training programme and voluntarily select to join the Business Incubation period, STITCHTOSTITCH will aid and guide in the formation of a Co- operative. The focus of STITCHTOSTITCH is training and business coaching. After the co-op has been formed, it will be a separate legal entity that will be governed by the co-op constitution.

If several co- ops form, they can decide to form a secondary co-op. STITCHTOSTITCH would coach the secondary co-op on how to do things like how to gain raw material. As part of the business coaching model that we adopt, STITCHTOSTITCH provides coaching and training on governance processes and executive management. By invitation a secondary co-op can represent a primary co-op on the STITCHTOSTITCH board. The secondary co-op would provide economies of scale for the purchase of raw material, marketing and sales.

Qualified staff assist trainees with product quality control and marketing of products. Trainees are coached with regards to becoming effective business women in their respective sectors and community. A robust marketing strategy will be developed as part of the coaching process.

At any point the trainees are free to form a CMT. This is purely a business model decision. This is not a legal entity or form of business. Trainees purely decide to take on piecemeal work for established organizations.

Primary co- ops, as well as the secondary co-op, will require ongoing business coaching. STITCHTOSTITCH will contract with these regarding the extent of these services.

TESTIMONIES FROM TRAINEES WHO HAVE COMPLETED A TRAINING

Pumza

I graduated from STICHTOSTICH in 2015. I have learnt sewing skills, business skills, craft skills and computer skills. Currently, I am in the process of starting my own business.

Through the help of STITCHTOSTITCH, I am currently pursuing an advanced business skills course with SABRI. I am also with STITCHTOSTITCH PHASE 2 business ladies.

This is teaching me how to be self-sustainable. I will be creating job opportunities and helping others.

I am grateful to the STITCH2STITCH team and appreciate the opportunity I have been granted.

May they be able to continue helping other single ladies too.

STITCHTOSTITCH has helped me a lot by empowering me with skills and information. S2S taught me how to be a person who isn’t afraid to take risks in a business.

STITCHTOSTITCH opened doors for me in many different avenues. I used to have an inferiority complex, but now I am slowly developing to becoming self-assertive focusing more on my passions. I now know what I want in life.

I am also volunteering as a computer skills lecturer at STITCHTOSTITCH.

I am currently attending an advanced program at SABRI which STITCHTOSTITCH referred me to. I am now learning more about running a business and I can confidently call myself a “small business woman.”

I appreciate the STITCHTOSTITCH team for giving me the opportunity to learn and to better myself, for me it is a huge investment. Knowledge is power.

I have learnt so many things from STITCHTOSTITCH. The following are skills I have learnt, sewing, computer skills, craft, business skills, loving people and communicating well with people.

I am really thankful for STITCHTOSTITCH because I also learnt how to open a business.

The STITCHTOSTITCH team is also very patient with people. They are excellent teachers.

Interaction with people has been a good thing for me. Meeting and working as a team with new people has been an advantage for me. I have learnt how to be confident. I am happy with all I have learnt at STITCHTOSTITCH.

Ntombamazizi

STITCHTOSTITCH trainers’ commitment has helped me to succeed in many things. I see my future as being bright. Now I know how to do sewing using a machine. When I arrived at STITCHTOSTITCH I knew nothing. I now know that I can support my children by making money by selling clothes that I have made. STITCHTOSTITCH is a place that helps people and provides them with skills. For example, business skills, sewing skills, computer skills and crafts. I do have hope now that I am able to expand my own business. I want to thank STITCHTOSTITCH for the future that they have given me and my children.

This talent and heart that God has given them should be passed on to other people. God bless you all the time.

Nomaphelo

STITCHTOSTITCH has helped me a lot in many ways. When I first came, I didn’t know anything about sewing and craft. I didn’t even know how to handle the sewing machine, but by the time I finished the course things were not the same. I know how to make a bag, shirt and a skirt. STITCHTOSTITCH did empower me in other areas. I’ve learnt how to handle my finances in business skills classes. Before I didn’t even know how to be humble or how to behave as a person around other people. I also learnt how to manage time. I can proudly say that STITCHTOSTITCH has changed my life drastically and that I have a better future. I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. I can see the light now.

Constance

STITCHTOSTITCH has helped me a lot. When I came here, I knew nothing but now I learnt sewing, bead work, craft work. STITCHTOSTITCH has helped me to grow spiritually. I was too lazy to read the Bible but now I’m not lazy anymore. I also learnt about time management in business skills. Another important thing was that when you have a business, it is good to keep your eye open for business opportunities. You must always be sure of what you want in life. STITCHTOSTITCH taught me about being confident and being trustworthy. I learnt so much at STITCHTOSTITCH.
